My 60-Day Cold Therapy Journey: A Transformation Like No Other

Hello!

As some of you might know, I've been exploring the world of cold therapy for the last 60 days. Today, I am beyond excited to share my experiences with you and, hopefully, inspire some of you to give it a try.

First things first, let me tell you how it all started. On Day 1, I found myself filled with anticipation as I prepared for my first dip (in a while) into a bath full of cold water at home (the R1SE Ice Baths were still in production). It was a mere 12 degrees Celsius, but believe me, it felt way colder! I managed to stay in for all of 10 seconds before I jumped out, squealing. Now, just two months later, I immerse myself in water as cold as 4 degrees Celsius, for an invigorating 10 minutes. I've grown to love this practice - it's become the highlight of my day!  I never thought I'd say that!

Now, let's talk about the transformation.

The Physical Changes

I started my cold therapy journey with the hopes of alleviating some of my persistent injuries. I've been struggling with sciatica and an impinged shoulder, both stubborn and painful. Imagine my delight when, after just a couple of weeks of daily cold dips, the pain began to dissipate. Now, two months in, I'm amazed to report that my injuries have completely vanished.  I still can't believe it.

Raynaud's recovery

I have suffered with Raynaud's for many years.  The first few Ice Baths were hard as my Raynaud's would be triggered and my finger rendered useless for an hour or so after the dip.  But now.... no more Raynaud's.  Whoopee!

5kg Weight Loss

What's more, I've lost 5kg during this period. While my diet and exercise regimen haven't changed, my body composition has. The theory behind this is the activation of brown fat - a type of body fat that burns energy and produces heat, thereby boosting metabolism and aiding weight loss.

Goodbye DOMS!

It has also really helped with post exercise recovery. Last Friday I ran the round Sheffield run with my pal James, we did it on our own got a little lost and covered 27km, we ended with an Ice Bath (James has also been doing them regularly after a Hot Sculpt class).  We did a great 10 minutes together in a twin tub and the next day ..... nothing, no stiffness at all, in fact DOMS never appeared.

The Mental Boost

One thing I hadn't fully anticipated was the profound impact cold therapy would have on my mental wellbeing. It's hard to describe, but after each cold dip, my mind feels extraordinarily clear, calm and focused. It's as if the icy water washes away my worries and leaves me in a state of invigorating tranquillity.

🚿 Cold Showers and Surprising Discoveries

To complement the ice baths, I've also incorporated daily cold showers into my routine. Yes, you read that right! I no longer start with it warm, I start and finish on cold and it doesn't even feel cold anymore (a cold shower before sleep on a hot night is incredible for aiding sleep). I'll admit, it's quite a shock at first, but once you're out, you feel exhilarated and refreshed. My wife, Jen, often falls prey to my forgetfulness of turning the water back to warm - but hey, at least it's a surprise wake-up call, right?

We even got our 12 year old to do 21 Cold Showers in a row (as he seems to find it hard to wake up in the morning).  It's amazing what the bribe of a Play Station game can achieve πŸ˜‚

Why You Should Try Cold Therapy

Cold therapy, popularised by individuals like Wim Hof and validated by numerous scientific studies, offers a myriad of benefits - boosting the immune system, improving circulation, enhancing mental well-being and more.

However, what I've realised is that beyond the physical and mental benefits, there's an incredible lesson in resilience. Confronting the cold water every day teaches you to withstand discomfort, to breathe through it, and to emerge stronger.

Now, as we step into the beautiful summer season, I challenge you to incorporate cold therapy into your routine. It might be as simple as a cold shower, or you might even decide to join us at R1SE's new Ice Bath Centre. Trust me, the benefits are well worth the initial shock of the cold!

Remember, as with any new wellness practice, always check with your healthcare provider before you start, and ensure you're following safe procedures.

I'll leave you with one of my favourite quotes from Wim Hof: "Feeling is understanding." It's time to dive in, literally, and feel the transformation for yourself!

Stay chilly, my friends!
