Why we're doing this
The summer R1SE comes outside.
July is the perfect month to step out of the studio and experience how R1SE fits into the rhythm of a Sheffield summer. Four reasons we built Summer Nine:
Community feel in and around Sheffield
Get to know the R1SE staff — the people behind the studios
Show how R1SE fits into the rhythm of your life, not the other way around
Encourage exploring the city and being active over summer
How it works
Four steps. One month.

Challenge 01 · with Rosie
Ride & Recover
Earn the rest.
Ride Rosie's cycle route from R1SE Brook Place out to Redmires Reservoirs and back — 15km through the Peak District fringe with a café stop along the way. Then head straight to Kelham Urban Spa for compression therapy so your legs get the second half of the session.
“The fresh air, open roads and beautiful Peak District views are exactly why I keep coming back to this route — no matter how many times I ride it, it always gives me that sense of escape and reset. Compression after a long ride isn't a treat, it's the second half of the session — your legs will tell you the difference the next morning.”
The activity

Load this into your cycling app before you leave so the route is ready on your phone.
OpenCafé stop
Blue Moo Café
Rosie's pick at the Redmires end of the ride. Café money is essential, not optional.
Alternative stop
Forge Dam Café
Shorter coffee stop option if you want to pause halfway before pushing up to Redmires.
What you need
- Road or gravel bike — hire from Russell's Bicycle Shed if needed
- Helmet — non-negotiable
- Layers and sun cream
- Bike lights and reflective clothing if riding in the evening
- Café money
- 20 credits for compression therapy at Kelham Urban Spa
The science
Hard cycling creates micro-tears in muscle fibre and drives fluid into the legs — the heaviness you feel on the way home. Compression therapy applies graduated pressure that moves that fluid out of the tissue and back into circulation, supporting repair, easing soreness and helping the legs feel ready again sooner. Doing it within a few hours of riding, before inflammation peaks, is when it works hardest.

Challenge 02 · with Chris
Walk & Breathe
Move outside. Reset inside.
Follow Chris's Peak District trail — a proper head-clearing walk with views worth the effort. Then attend a breathwork session at either studio within three days of completing the walk.
“I do this walk when my head is full and I need it emptied — there's a point about halfway where the signal drops, the view opens up, and everything that felt urgent stops feeling urgent. The breathwork after is where I process whatever the walk shook loose. The two together are a proper reset, not just exercise.”

The activity
Peak District hike
Peak District — Chris's route via Komoot
Café stop
The Norfolk Arms
Incredible views, a lovely pint, pub grub and great smiley service. Chris parks his van nearby and works from the top of the peak — the café is built for the way back down.
What you need
- Sturdy walking shoes or trail trainers
- Layers — the Peak District does what it wants in July
- Water and snacks
- Cash for the café
- 20+ credits for your chosen breathwork session
The science
Walking in natural environments measurably reduces cortisol and lowers activity in the prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain responsible for rumination and overanalysis. Breathwork compounds the effect by directly stimulating the vagus nerve, shifting the nervous system from sympathetic to parasympathetic. Together they work as a two-stage reset: the walk clears the noise, the breathwork settles what remains.

Challenge 03 · with Hanna
Wild & Still
Go slow. Find what's growing.
Head to Endcliffe Park — woods, grassland and river just ten minutes from the city centre — and spend an hour foraging with Hanna's guide. Then come back to R1SE for yin yoga and let the stillness the walk creates settle properly.
“I've been foraging since I was small and it completely changes the way you see the world — once you know what's edible you can never walk past a hedgerow the same way again. Sheffield is genuinely extraordinary for this; most people have no idea what's growing right next to them. The yin after is where that feeling settles in properly.”
The activity
Foraging walk
Endcliffe Park, Sheffield
No experience needed. Kids are very welcome to help forage — they are consistently better at finding bilberries than adults.
The R1SE session
Yin Yoga
Brook Place or Kelham
Book on the schedule⏱ Attend yin after your foraging walk
What to look for in July
- Wild garlic
- Elderflower
- Nettles
- Cleavers / sticky willy
- Meadowsweet
- Yarrow
- Wood sorrel
- Plantain
- Bilberries
- Rosebay willowherb
- Early blackberries
Foraging safety
Only forage what you can confidently identify. Stick to the guide, avoid anything you are unsure about, and be especially careful near waterways where giant hogweed can grow. If in doubt, leave it.
What you need
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Gardening gloves for nettles
- Small scissors or snippers
- A basket, tote bag, tupperware or colander
- Layers for cooler woodland paths
- 14–20 credits for yin yoga at either studio
- Grip socks and yoga mat optional
The science
Time in nature has measurable effects on the nervous system: cortisol drops, heart rate lowers, and attention restores within minutes of entering green space. Foraging deepens this by adding slow, focused, present-moment attention. Yin yoga after a foraging walk compounds the effect through conscious breathing and sustained holds, extending the parasympathetic state nature begins.
Photo proof required
Upload a photo from Endcliffe Park, your basket, or something you safely identified.
Choose from your camera roll or take a photo on your phone. We'll resize it before upload.
Challenge 04 · with Cat
Sculpt & Supper
Train strong. Eat well.
Attend any Sculpt class at either studio, then head home and make Cat's Gochujang Tofu — a plant-based post-workout recipe designed around exactly what your body needs after a hard session.
“Sculpt is a challenging class designed to help you build strength and lean muscle over time through consistent practice. To get the most from your workout, what you eat afterwards matters just as much as the effort you put in during class. This recipe is one of my go-to post-workout meals because it's delicious, quick, simple and packed with flavour.”
The activity
Cook Cat's Gochujang Tofu
Your kitchen
The supper is part of the challenge. Plant-based meals should never mean compromising on taste or nutrition.
Post-workout recipe
Cat's Gochujang Tofu
Complete plant protein, quick-release carbohydrates and healthy fats from peanut butter — all in a fast post-workout supper.
Ingredients
For the tofu
- 1 block firm tofu, drained and cubed
- 1 tbsp cornflour
- 1 tbsp oil
For the sauce
- 2 tbsp gochujang paste
- 1 tbsp soy sauce
- 1 tbsp maple syrup
- 1 tbsp peanut butter
- 1 tbsp rice vinegar or lime juice
- 1 small garlic clove, grated
- 2–4 tbsp water to loosen
To serve
- Rice, noodles, salad or steamed greens
- Spring onion, sesame seeds or chilli flakes if you want them
Method
- 1Preheat the oven to 200°C, or heat a frying pan if you prefer crispy tofu on the hob.
- 2Pat the tofu dry, cube it, then toss with cornflour and oil.
- 3Bake for 20–25 minutes or pan-fry until golden and crisp.
- 4Whisk the sauce ingredients together, adding water until glossy and pourable.
- 5Warm the sauce gently in a pan, then toss through the tofu.
- 6Serve with your chosen rice, noodles, salad or greens.
What you need
- 14–20 credits for any Sculpt class at either studio
- Grip socks optional
- Ingredients for Cat's recipe
- About 30 minutes in the kitchen
The science
After a hard strength session, the body is primed to repair muscle fibre and replenish glycogen. A meal with protein, carbohydrates and supportive fats in the 30–90 minute recovery window gives the body the building blocks it needs: protein for repair, carbohydrates for energy stores, and fats to keep the meal satisfying and nourishing.

Upload a photo from Sculpt, your ingredients, or the finished Gochujang Tofu.

Challenge 05 · with Bella
Run & Unwind
Run first. Slow down after.
Complete any Sheffield parkrun on a Saturday in July — Millhouses, Graves or Endcliffe — then attend any yoga or Pilates class at R1SE that same weekend. The 11am Saturday Flow works beautifully after a finish.
“I started doing parkrun before yoga on a Saturday and it changed the whole feel of the weekend. The run gets you out of your head, then the class afterwards brings you back into your body. It is such a simple reset.”
The activity
Any Sheffield parkrun
Millhouses, Graves or Endcliffe
5km, Saturday 9am. Register free and bring your barcode.
What you need
- Running shoes
- Free parkrun registration and barcode
- 14–20 credits for yoga or Pilates at either studio
- Grip socks optional
- A recovery mindset
The science
Running compresses the spine, loads the posterior chain and raises sympathetic drive. A slower yoga or Pilates session afterwards restores range, brings breath rate down and shifts the nervous system toward recovery. The combination helps the body absorb the training stimulus without carrying all the tension into the rest of the weekend.
Photo proof required
Upload a photo from parkrun or your parkrun finish confirmation.

Dare Yourself
The class you've been avoiding.
Book a class you have never attended at R1SE. Wheel Yoga. Aerial. Reformer. Barre. The dare is personal: choose the class you always scroll past, tell the instructor it is your first time, and step in.
“Every class I teach has someone in it who nearly didn't book because they thought it wasn't for them. Then they come out smiling, sweaty, surprised, and already planning the next one. The first booking is the brave bit.”
The activity
Try a brand-new class
Either R1SE studio
What you need
- 14–20 credits for any class you've never attended
- Grip socks optional
- An open mind
- Tell the instructor it is your first time
The science
Introducing the body to a genuinely new movement pattern challenges coordination, proprioception and attention. Novel movement builds new neural pathways, keeps training mentally engaging, and helps break the habit loop that keeps people repeating only what already feels familiar.
Photo proof required
Upload a photo from the studio before or after your first new class.

Gold & Flow
Chase the light. Move with it.
Head to Surprise View during golden hour — the hour before sunset or the hour after sunrise — any day in July. Take your photo at the viewpoint, then attend any yoga or Pilates class at R1SE the same day.
“Surprise View is one of those places that instantly changes your state. The sky opens up, Sheffield drops away, and everything feels wider. If you catch it in golden hour and then move afterwards, it sets the whole day differently.”
The activity
Golden hour at Surprise View
Surprise View, S32 1DA
Around 20 minutes from Brook Place.
Viewpoint
Surprise View
Use postcode S32 1DA and aim for the hour after sunrise or the hour before sunset.
Timing tip
Golden hour
Check sunrise and sunset before you go. Clear evenings and soft cloud both work beautifully.
OpenWhat you need
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Layers — the ridge catches a breeze even in July
- A charged phone for the photo
- 14–20 credits for yoga or Pilates at either studio
- Grip socks optional
The science
Exposure to natural light close to sunrise or sunset helps regulate circadian rhythm and mood by giving the brain a strong environmental cue. Gentle movement afterwards compounds that shift through breath, mobility and down-regulation, turning a beautiful view into a full-body reset.
Photo proof required
Upload your golden hour photo from Surprise View.

The Barre Bet
Bring someone who thinks barre looks easy.
Attend Barre and bring a friend who has never tried it before. Their first R1SE class is on us. Book for both of you, take the class together, and enjoy the inevitable leg shake afterwards.
“I have never once had someone come to barre for the first time and say it was easier than they expected. It is tiny movements, big burn, and a lot of laughing when your legs start to shake.”
The activity
Bring a first-time Barre friend
R1SE Studio
What you need
- 14–20 credits for your Barre class
- A friend who has never tried Barre
- Your friend's name and email for their invite
- Grip socks optional but recommended
- A sense of humour for the leg shake afterwards
The science
Barre targets slow-twitch muscle fibres through small, controlled, repeated movements. The burn comes from time under tension rather than big explosive effort, which makes it brilliantly effective for endurance, posture and deep stabilising strength.
Photo proof required
Upload a photo of you and your Barre friend at the studio.

R1SE After Dark
One evening. Full reset.
Complete six Summer Nine challenges and your invitation to R1SE After Dark unlocks automatically. Expect a candlelit evening at R1SE: breathwork to open, sound bath to close, and a proper end-of-month reset.
“Friday evenings are my favourite time to properly slow down. Breathwork and sound together can take people from busy, wired and holding everything to quiet, grounded and actually present in their body.”
The activity
Earned evening invitation
R1SE
Limited spaces. Members who complete all nine are named at the event.
What you need
- Six completed Summer Nine challenges
- Comfortable clothing and layers
- Nothing else — just yourself and the month you've had
The science
Conscious connected breathwork changes breathing rhythm, CO2 tolerance and nervous-system state, often creating a strong down-regulating effect after the peak. Sound bath layers steady auditory input on top, giving the brain a simple anchor and helping the body stay in a calmer parasympathetic state.
