Controlled Discomfort: Are You Building Resilience or Just Getting Better at Suffering?
Sauna, ice baths and hard training can build capacity, but discomfort is not automatically progress. Here is how to tell useful stress from self-punishing overdrive.

There is a seductive idea in modern wellness: if something is difficult, it must be doing you good.
Stay in the sauna longer. Make the plunge colder. Add another round. Prove that your mind is stronger than the signal telling you to stop.
But discomfort is an input, not an outcome. The question is not how much you can tolerate. It is what the experience is teaching your body and mind, and whether that lesson helps you live, work and perform better afterwards.
This distinction matters. At R1SE, more than 10,000 people have used our saunas and ice baths, from complete beginners to professional athletes. The most effective sessions are rarely the most theatrical. They are the ones with a clear purpose, an appropriate dose and enough control to leave the person more capable than when they arrived.
That is the difference between training resilience and rehearsing self-punishment.
The Finnish idea that contains a warning
Finland has a word for the capacity to keep acting when a situation becomes difficult: sisu. It is often translated as grit, courage or determination, although none of those quite captures it. Sisu is closer to finding another reserve when the obvious reserves appear to have run out.
That sounds entirely positive. Research suggests it is more complicated.
In 2022, Finnish researchers developed and validated a questionnaire called the Sisu Scale. Their analysis separated sisu into two broad forms.
Beneficial sisu included extraordinary perseverance, an action-oriented mindset and a sense of latent power: the capacity to mobilise when circumstances demand it.
Harmful sisu included damage to oneself, damage to one’s reasoning and damage to other people. This is perseverance after judgement has left the room: continuing because stopping feels like weakness, even when continuing no longer serves the goal.
The two forms were associated with very different outcomes. Beneficial sisu was linked with higher wellbeing and fewer depressive symptoms. Harmful sisu was linked with lower wellbeing and higher general stress, work stress and depressive symptoms. A later study of 455 survey participants found a similar pattern: beneficial sisu was associated with better reported wellbeing, health and work performance, while harmful sisu moved in the opposite direction.
These studies are observational and heavily Finnish, so they do not prove that one kind of perseverance causes better health or that the other causes harm. But they give us a useful lens: pushing through is not a virtue by itself. Its value depends on whether it expands your capacity or overrides your ability to make a good decision.
That lens belongs in every sauna, cold plunge and hard training session.
What cold-water research actually says
Cold immersion is a genuine stressor. The first breath is involuntary. Blood vessels constrict. Heart rate and blood pressure can rise. Your nervous system receives a very clear message that conditions have changed.
Meeting that signal calmly can be powerful. You practise staying present while your body asks for urgency. You learn that a strong sensation does not have to dictate your behaviour. With sensible repetition, the experience can become less chaotic and more controlled.
But the scientific picture is not “colder equals healthier.”
A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis examined 11 controlled studies involving 3,177 healthy adults. The interventions varied enormously, from 30-second exposures to two hours, in water between 7°C and 15°C. The review found that some effects depended on when researchers measured them. Markers of inflammation increased immediately and one hour after immersion, consistent with an acute stress response. Reported stress was lower at 12 hours, but not immediately, one hour, 24 hours or 48 hours after exposure. Some individual studies reported improvements in sleep quality and quality of life, while pooled results did not show a significant improvement in mood.
That is interesting evidence, not a universal prescription. Six of the 11 studies tested a single exposure, sample sizes were often small and the study populations lacked diversity. Only one included study involved female participants.
The honest conclusion is that cold may be useful for particular people and purposes, but its effects are not automatic, identical or fully understood. The dose, timing, individual and desired outcome all matter.
Stress plus recovery creates adaptation
Sauna and cold work through different physiological pathways, but both make a demand on the body. Training is a demand too. So is a difficult conversation, a deadline or a night of poor sleep.
The body does not experience these in isolation. It experiences the total load.
An appropriately dosed stressor followed by recovery can encourage adaptation. Keep adding stress without enough recovery and the same practice can become another withdrawal from an already overdrawn account.
This is why a brutal contrast session after a brutal training week is not necessarily “mental toughness.” It may simply be more load. It is also why an easy sauna and brief, controlled plunge can sometimes be the more advanced choice.
Resilience is not the refusal to stop. It is the ability to respond well, including the ability to change the plan.
The R1SE five-part test
Before deciding how hot, cold or long to go, run the session through five questions.
1. Purpose: what are you trying to achieve?
“To do something hard” is not a complete purpose.
You might want to feel alert before work, downshift after a demanding day, practise calm under pressure, enjoy a social ritual or support recovery between competitions. Each goal calls for a different session.
When the purpose is vague, intensity tends to become the scoreboard. When the purpose is clear, the right dose becomes easier to recognise.
2. Dose: what is enough today?
Temperature and time are only part of the dose. Your training load, sleep, hydration, experience, health and emotional state matter too.
The right dose should create a meaningful signal without turning the session into a survival test. You do not receive bonus adaptation for the final minute spent ignoring every cue your body is giving you.
Start conservatively. Change one variable at a time. Progress only when you can repeat the current exposure with composure.
3. Control: can you still choose your response?
Controlled discomfort should contain agency.
In the cold, your breathing may accelerate at first, but you should be able to regain a steady rhythm. In the sauna, you should remain clear-headed and able to leave without assistance. At every point, exiting should be a decision, not a defeat.
If panic, ego or social pressure is making the decision for you, the useful part of the session has probably ended.
4. Recovery: what happens after the dramatic bit?
The value of a session is revealed later.
Do you feel settled, energised or ready for the next demand? Does it support your sleep and training? Or are you left dizzy, depleted, wired late at night or unusually flat the following day?
Track the downstream effect, not just the achievement inside the room. A session that looks impressive but repeatedly makes the rest of your day worse is poorly dosed.
5. Repeatability: could this become a practice?
A useful protocol does not need constant escalation to feel worthwhile.
If every visit must be colder, longer or harder than the last, you are no longer using discomfort as a tool. You are using discomfort as proof. Sustainable practice leaves room for easy days, maintenance days and the occasional decision to stop early.
Consistency builds capacity. Escalation builds a story.
Green, amber and red signals
Use these signs to assess the session in real time.
Green: productive challenge
- You know why you are doing the session.
- The intensity is strong but your breathing and attention return under control.
- You can leave at any time without feeling that you have failed.
- You return to baseline comfortably afterwards.
- The session supports the rest of your day, sleep or training.
Amber: reassess the dose
- You are chasing a number, temperature or record rather than an outcome.
- You feel you need to match somebody else’s exposure.
- Your breathing remains frantic or your technique deteriorates.
- You are using heat or cold to mask exhaustion rather than respond to it.
- Dread, irritability or depleted energy follows sessions repeatedly.
Amber does not always mean stop. It means pay attention, reduce the dose or change the plan.
Red: get out and get help if needed
- Chest pain, faintness, confusion or unusual shortness of breath.
- Loss of coordination, severe shivering or rapidly worsening numbness.
- An inability to exit safely without assistance.
- Continuing because discomfort feels like punishment you deserve.
Cold water carries a risk of cold shock and drowning; never plunge alone in an uncontrolled setting. Heat can contribute to dehydration, dizziness and fainting. If you have a cardiovascular condition, uncontrolled blood pressure, a condition affected by temperature extremes, are pregnant or take medication that may affect temperature regulation, seek appropriate medical advice before using sauna or cold immersion.
Match the tool to the goal
There is no single “best” contrast protocol because people are not pursuing a single outcome.
For a first experience: prioritise familiarity and control. Use a manageable sauna exposure, cool down fully, then make any cold exposure brief. Finish while you still feel composed and curious.
For everyday wellbeing: favour a dose that leaves you feeling better later, not simply proud immediately. You do not need to make every session a test.
For strength and muscle gain: timing matters. Repeated cold-water immersion immediately after resistance training may blunt some of the signalling involved in long-term muscle adaptation. If strength or hypertrophy is the priority, separate regular plunges from key lifting sessions unless a qualified coach has a specific reason not to.
For competition recovery: rapid recovery may sometimes take priority over long-term adaptation, especially between closely spaced events. This is where individual context and coaching judgement matter more than blanket rules.
For mental training: the goal is not to eliminate sensation. It is to notice the alarm, regulate your response and retain the ability to choose. One calm minute can train that skill better than five chaotic ones.
A simple controlled-discomfort session
For a healthy adult who already knows they tolerate sauna and cold, a conservative contrast session might look like this:
- Enter with a purpose and a time range, not a personal record.
- Use the sauna for roughly 10–15 minutes, leaving earlier if you feel dizzy, unwell or excessively uncomfortable.
- Cool down gradually and rehydrate as needed.
- If cold immersion suits your goal, start with 30–90 seconds at a manageable temperature.
- Focus on a long, unforced exhale. Do not hyperventilate or perform breath-holds in the water.
- Stop while you can still exit calmly and safely.
- Notice how you feel over the next few hours and the following morning. Use that feedback to set the next dose.
This is not a medical protocol, and it is not a target everyone needs to reach. It is a framework for learning. Beginners should start with less, while experienced people should resist assuming that experience makes them invulnerable.
The strongest choice may be to stop
There is real value in doing difficult things voluntarily. A sauna can teach patience. Cold can make the relationship between sensation and response impossible to ignore. Training can reveal reserves you did not know you had.
But the lesson is lost when endurance becomes identity.
Healthy resilience keeps judgement online. It knows the difference between a signal worth meeting and a warning worth respecting. It can stay, and it can leave. It does not need an audience, a record or a story about being tougher than everybody else.
The aim of controlled discomfort is not to become better at suffering.
It is to become better at choosing your response.
