Approximately 1 in 4 UK doctors meet criteria for clinical burnout in any given year, with junior doctors, GPs, and emergency medicine particularly affected. Burnout is associated with elevated depression, alcohol use, and a doubled risk of leaving the profession (BMA workforce survey; BMJ).

UK doctors face suicide rates significantly elevated above the general population, with female doctors at particular risk - a pattern documented across multiple OECD healthcare systems and acknowledged in NHS People Plans (Gerada, BMJ Career, 2018).

Surgeons report among the highest rates of work-related musculoskeletal pain of any profession - up to 87% experience neck, shoulder, or lumbar pain from prolonged static postures at theatre.
